Adventures to The Thrift Store #1 Dresses and Why I Love Them!

I love thrift stores, and I believe I’m happiest when I’m at one. All the treasures and things! Plus all the funky clothes, all the styles I was never aware of, all the brands that never made it to fame in my age. It’s exciting.

What I really love the most tho, is the dresses! I love dresses, even tho I grew up a bit of a tom boy. At some point in my life I’ve wanted to dress pretty but never knew how. I was a bigger curvier girl, and as mom would put it I got the genes that skipped a couple generations. Because of this I grew up in big baggy clothes, because we just didn’t know what to do with me. I honestly don’t remember seeing any good role model for me that wasn’t a twig. So dresses I tended to shy away from or anything form fitting for the matter.

And I’ll never forget dress shopping for school dances, what a nightmare. While most girls could go to 1 or 2 stores, I went through a whole mall. No support, fabric was to stretchy, not my style, all I could think of half the time was “I’m a big girl and I just want a dress to hold me together”. Looking back now I don’t think I was THAT big, but I was a little chubby. So I can understand how self conscious I was. But after college and losing some weight I feel much better about my self and my body. So now when I go to the thrift store, I bee line for the dress rack!

I love it even more because if I find a dress that fits and looks good, it’s like it was meant to be. I don’t pay attention to sizes or anything, I just grab until my arms are full and then try them all on. Even Prom Dresses! Or dresses that are just so outdated and silly looking! You have to imagine that someone actually wore it. It’s a silly laughable thought sometimes.

Needless to say I don’t take most dress home. I only take home something I instantly love and feel I will actually wear, not something that is just pretty and will sit in my closet. I typically look for “house cleaning” dresses or casual ones. I’m pretty picky about it. I look for heavier fabrics, because I still can’t stand stretchy fabrics.

So is there anything that you bee line for when you get to a thrift store?
